Job was the wealthiest man in his neighborhood, but in one terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day, he was completely wiped out. Not long after that, he developed such a bad case of leprosy that he cursed the day that he had been born. Finally, in a fit of despair, he prayed to die; but his heart just went right on beating. When he pulled himself together, he said he had only one question: Where in the world was God? Specifically, he said that he had looked for him in front and behind, on the right and on the left, but God was nowhere to be found. Throughout his search, he endured several theological thrust-and-parries with four of his closest friends. His search finally ended when, during a thrust by Elihu, God lunged out of the shadows with a parry. Just the way God wielded his foil gave Job the tremors. God’s attack was composed almost entirely of the most elegant and preposterous questions that have ever been posed. When God finally took a breath, Job whispered, “I have uttered what I did not understand, things too wonderful for me, which I did not know.” And then, to be sure that God knew that he he had gotten God’s point, he said, “I had heard of You by the hearing of the ear, but now my eye sees You; therefore I despise myself and repent in dust and ashes.” But God didn't let him despise himself for long. He gave Job back more riches than he had ever had, together with his health. What Job didn’t get was an explanation. But even if God had given him one that made splendid sense out of all the pain and suffering he had endured, it was no longer splendid sense that he needed. Job understood that, after having experienced the coming of the LORD, there wasn’t much else to say but, “Glory, hallelujah.”

Who We Are

Shiloh Community Church is a group of Believers who point at Jesus and say, "We can't prove a thing, but there's something about his eyes and his voice. There's something about the way he carries his head, his hands, the way he carries his cross—the way he carries us.”

We believe Jesus when he said, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but by me." (John 14:6) He didn't say that any doctrine or denomination was the way, the truth, and the life. He said that he was.

We are a group of Believers who are on the way, though not necessarily very far along it, and who have at least some dim and half-baked notion of whom to thank.
